This and That

First published in 2005) This and that: Don't spend a lot of time looking for no sodium chicken broth. It does not exist. You can find NSA (no salt added) chicken broth that is fatfree or lowfat (Health Valley, I think is the brand). Chicken has a certain amount of natural sodium, so it won't be sodium free. It will be NSA. As soon as you get it home, stick it in the fridge. When you get ready to use it, you can just skim off the fat, and voila! You have NSA/fatfree chicken broth!!

You can also buy Herb-ox brand very low sodium bouillon. Each packet makes 1 cup of broth that has 5 mg of sodium. That's about as low as you can go!!!

You definitely should take a multi-vitamin and also a good calcium supplement. I have had a Shaklee business for over 20 years, so would not take anything but that, since they are as natural as the government regs. will allow. I also take B-complex which aids in metabolizing foods.

To tell you the truth, I did not go "cold turkey" on the cold drinks. You'll get massive headaches and withdrawal symptoms if you do. I allowed myself one 12-oz. can a day to start, but only after I had drunk all my 100 oz. of water. Then I cut back to 1 every other day, and now, I have one maybe 2 times a week. Last week I didn't have one at all.

I WAS (note the WAS) a type 2 diabetic and went through the classes with my mother and then a couple of years later for me. Both times, they stressed to us that we should ALWAYS eat within 45 min. of arising. If not, then your metabolism basically is shut down for the whole day, because as you increase your activity (getting out of bed, for example), and don't give your body any fuel, it assumes it needs to go into starvation mode, which stores everything you put into it from then on. You MUST break that cycle. Have a grab and go breakfast in the fridge. Keep the pumpkin "bread" or make the sweet potato souffles or pancakes and eat them on the run with your bottle of water, if necessary, or blend up a quick smoothie with the powdered whites, ice, your fruit (if you can have that at breakfast), some spices and/or flavorings, etc. Then, time all your meals 2-3 hours apart from that first meal. It sets your schedule for the entire day. I hope that is helpful. So the big answer to your question is "NO". Do not wait so long to eat. It makes it harder to lose. Liz
